CoronaVirus Pandemic: What’s Happening Now in Canada

Highlights you should know as of March 15, 2020:

  • Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announces ‘significant’ fiscal stimulus package in the days ahead
  • Parliament suspended for five weeks, marking unprecedented moment in Canadian history
  • Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer advises cancellation of non-essential international travel 
  • Boats and Cruise Ships with more than 500 people are banned from docking in Canada until July 
  • Public Schools, select Colleges and Universities in Ontario and Quebec are closed 
  • Saskatchewan COVID-19 vaccine is officially in testing stages
  • Sports teams, libraries, recreation, and cultural centres are closing

Government of Canada announces new range of measures to combat COVID-19

  • Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announces a “significant” fiscal stimulus package in the days ahead. He previously announced a $1 billion COVID-19 package to combat the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, based upon the recommendation of top medical experts and scientist. 
  • Parliament has been suspended until April 20, an unprecedented first in Canadian history
  • Other measures currently in place: restrictions on the number of international flights permitted to land and banning of boats and cruise ships carrying more than 500 people from docking in Canadian ports until July.

Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer warns against non-essential international travels

  • Dr. Theresa Tam advising Canadians to either postpone or cancel all non-essential travel outside the country
  • Dr. Tam said “if you travel abroad, you could be subject to the measures of the other countries.” 

Schools and Education Institutions closing in Ontario and Quebec

  • Quebec announces decision to close schools, universities, daycares, and CEGEPs for two weeks to slow the spread of COVID-19. 
  • Ontario was first to announce the closure of publicly funded schools from March 14 through to April 5 after the recommendations of the province’s Chief Medical Officer.

Closures of Libraries, Recreational, and Cultural Centres

  • The City of Mississauga will be closing all recreation, library, and cultural facilities starting Saturday, March 14 through to April 5 to the public. This includes the Living Arts Centre, Meadowvale Theatre, Paramount Fine Foods Centre and the Mississauga Seniors’ Centre. Programming at these facilities will be cancelled.
  • All City of Mississauga programs and activities will be cancelled from March 14 to April 5. This includes March Break programs and activities.
  • The City of Mississauga will be offering full refunds without any administration charge. Please be patient as we work through the process.
  • The majority of Mississauga sports teams/leagues have suspended all activities. Check in directly with your sports organization for further details.

COVID-19 Testing/Screening Centres to be Set Up Across Canada

  • In British Columbia, health authorities are working on new COVID-19 testing centres
  • Ontario is set to open its COVID-19 assessments centres at hospitals in the next several days 
  • Ontario is also in the early stages of planning to establish at-home testing

  • Ontario: 104 cases
  • British Columbia: 73 cases
  • Alberta: 39 cases
  • Quebec: 24 cases
  • Manitoba: 4 cases

  • Saskatchewan: 2 cases
  • Newfound Land and Labrador: 1 case
  • Prince Edward Island: 1 case
  • Total Across Canada: 250 Cases
