For the first time in years, TTC said it would not provide a free New Year’s Eve ride due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
TTC spokesperson, Stuart Green, confirmed the news on Wednesday.
“After discussions with sponsors, and given current restrictions, we believe that partying should not be encouraged,” Green said on Twitter. We hope everyone celebrates safely towards the end of 2020 by NOT gathering! The regular service will still operate. ”
GO Transit confirmed on Wednesday that it will not offer the free service on New Year’s Eve either.
“The company is letting the media know that we will not provide a free service on New Year’s Eve this year,” GO Transit spokeswoman Anne Marie Aikins said on social media.
“This is the year of celebrating at home with live family, so not partying is the right and safe thing to do.”
One report sheds light on the difficulties TTC has suffered from the pandemic, as the unprecedented low passenger volume could jeopardize the public transport provider’s future.
Since the virus hit in March, the number of passengers on GO Transit has decreased by 80%. At the start of the first batch, TTC reported a monthly loss of $ 92 million, but losses have improved since then to around $ 70 million a month.
