Health Minister announces mandatory self-isolation for Canadian Travellers returning home

As of early Wednesday morning, Canadian Health Minister Patty Hajdu told the Senate in Ottawa that all travellers, with an exception of “essential workers” will be legally required and obligated to self-isolate themselves upon arrival in Canada for 14 days.

The new measures are currently being enacted under the federal Quarantine Act to further prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus. The Health Minister said that the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers will be informing all arriving passengers of the mandatory self-isolation requirement.

She further stated that all international travellers will be informed they will:

  • Not allowed to make any stops along the way home
  • Not allowed to take public transit
  • Must self-isolate for at least 14 days

In addition, Health Minister Patty Hajdu noted that travellers are forbidden to self-isolate in an area where they may be in contact with vulnerable people, such as the elderly or those who have medical conditions. Should this happen, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) will be making alternative accommodation arrangements for those travellers.

“My officials are working with CBSA right now to ensure that people know that this will be serious and that there will be significant penalties if people violate the quarantine”

Travellers who can come home will be arriving at one of the four international airports that have been previously announced to stay open for international travellers. However, the Health Minister restated that travellers will be forced to self-isolate for 14 days in the city they land in. To support these travellers the Health Minister said “We will provide the accommodations and meals for those situations”.
