Every year, we witness lots of changes in fashionable colours and styles. But who dictates them? Fashion often reflects consumer trends. In addition, the Pantone Color Institute does a yearly colour forecast, inspiring designers and printers to adopt its new hue. Last year’s colour was Ultra Violet, representing meditation, a practice that brings about wisdom and peace of mind that are much needed in today’s busy world.

In 2019, the new colour is Living Coral. This pinky-orange shade expresses a positive and hopeful lifestyle. Unfortunately, because of climate change, coral living in the sea is being bleached of their colours. Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute, believes we have to pay attention to this. The vice president of the company, Laurie Pressman, says the new colour has “humanizing qualities” that bring about comforting feelings in today’s “dehumanized” digital society.
Fashion lovers need to understand that the clothing industry has had a negative impact on the environment. According to the book Sustainable Fashion and Textiles, by Kate Fletcher, dyes and bleach used in clothing production, along with harmful soaps and discharged microfibers are the main poisoners of the environment. Pantone has chosen Living Coral as the colour of the year to tweak consumer awareness, point out the need for environmental protection and let us know we can make a positive difference.
