The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership, or CPTPP for short, is a new free trade agreement that aims to eliminate most tariffs across all sectors. In December of 2018, only six out of the 11 participating countries had ratified and implemented the agreement. Vietnam ratified the agreement in January of 2019.
To help Canadian businesses access the trade agreement, representatives from Export Development Canada (EDC) attended a workshop called Invest Ottawa by Christian Sivière who shared 10 valuable tips on how Canadian businesses can access the CPTPP. At the end of the workshop, Christian Sivière summarized his tips as follows: Figure out which markets you and your business wish to export to, learn and understand the rule of origins for your product, create budgets and cost analyses of the logistics, and consider product adaptation or development of new products that may benefit from the CPTPP.
